Longtime Sports Illustrated (SI) manager Chris Stone has been upped to editorial director for Time Inc.’s sports brands, including SI, Golf and SI Kids as Time continues to push beyond its traditional print roots into the realm of digital video storytelling formats.

In this new role, Stone will oversee all editorial content and operations across platforms for the three brands.

“He (Stone) brings great vision to the nexus of content and the digital, social, video and experiential ecosystem. He offers a fresh perspective, and the ambition to experiment and innovate at a time when we are transforming these iconic brands into true multimedia, multi-platform businesses,” said Rich Battista, president, Time Inc. entertainment & sports group and video, in a statement confirming the promotion.

Stone takes on the position after nearly four years at the helm of SI. There, he instituted a new approach to cross-platform content, including the creation of franchises such as  TheMMQB.com, SI Films, Planet Futbol and new lifestyle verticals SI Edge and Fashionable 50. Among his notable achievements, Stone is credited with guiding SI Swimsuit from an annual print edition into the digital space, with a reach of 70 million U.S. adults across platforms and channels.

He also spearheaded the infusion of new multi-skilled editorial talent into the organization, overseeing several journalistic accomplishments, including exclusives with LeBron James, Jason Collins and Michael Phelps and SI’s uncovering of Alex Rodriguez’s positive steroids tests.

Since joining SI in 1992 and prior to his managing editor role, Stone oversaw virtually every major sports beat, working with the likes of Tom Verducci, Lee Jenkins and Jack McCallum.
