Indigenous Media names John Zhang as EVP of marketing

His current projects include promotion around the prodco's recently launched 60 Second Docs and the sequel to its hit Snapchat feature film Sickhouse.

L.A.-based Indigenous Media has onboarded John Zhang as EVP of marketing as the digital prodco actively looks to boost its content output and audience reach across platforms.

Zhang, who previously held a marketing exec role at Izo-branded digital channel DanceOn, will report to Indigenous COO Jake Avnet.

“With our continued commitment to an increasing number of multi-platform projects, it’s more important than ever that we have innovative professionals with strong digital and entertainment media experience like Zhang overseeing Indigenous Media’s marketing efforts,” said Avnet in a statement.

At DanceOn, Zhang led audience development and network growth, show, series and brand marketing, PR, social media, digital media and influencer marketing. His team is credited with the marketing and promotion of the #WatchMeDanceOn campaign, a music-video creation project spawned from the 2015 internet sensation “Whip/Nae Nae” by Silento (real name Ricky Hawk).That video alone has now surpassed more than one billion views on YouTube.

Previously, Zhang managed audience development, digital media and marketing campaigns at Live Nation, Nickelodeon and MTV.

Zhang’s current projects with Indigenous include the recently launched 60 Second Docs, a bi-weekly series offered mainly through Facebook, with some episodes uploaded to YouTube, Twitter, Vid.Me and Instagram.

He will also lead marketing strategy and promotion of the sequel to Indigenous’s hit Snapchat feature film Sickhouse, which, according to the prodco, garnered more than 110 million total views over the course of five days and is available now on Vimeo, BitTorrent and Fullscreen.
