Taryn Southern makes the leap to linear – briefly

Party Fun Times with Taryn, a new (mostly) online series, is the latest in Maker Studio's growing line of originals starring digital talent.

Comedian Taryn Southern is the latest YouTuber to bring her digital star-power to linear television, though, in this case, it was just for one episode.

Party Fun Times With Taryn, Southern’s new talk show on YouTube, was recently re-formatted by Disney-owned Maker Studios and broadcast on a local Fox affiliate station in Fargo, North Dakota. Following its broadcast, Maker, which produces Party Fun Times, released a tongue-in-cheek statement announcing that Party Fun Times was the most popular female-hosted show of the night — in Fargo.

The show features Southern playing host to various guests poking fun at internet culture and dolling out deliberately bad advice on sex, yoga and relationships.

A rep for Maker said that the linear broadcast was a one-time occurrence done as an effort to promote the series, and that the show will continue on as an online-only series. Episodes roll out every Tuesday on Southern’s YouTube channel, where she has more than 450,000 subscribers.

Though Maker won’t be bringing Party Fun Times permanently to linear anytime soon, it’s just one series in the growing slate of original programs created by the MCN as of late.

It also recently teamed up with controversial social media comedian Josh Ostrovsky (also known as the “Fat Jew”) to create the animated series Story Time with Fat Jew. The animated series began rolling out on Facebook, YouTube and Maker’s own streaming platform, MakerTV, Dec. 7.

Another animated series is Pugatory, which bowed Oct. 31 on the MakerTV platform, as well as its own website. This series used the voice talents of Felix Kjellberg and Marzia Bizognin, better known to their millions (and millions) fans as PewDiePie and CutiePieMarzia. Maker has also created skateboard adventure series on YouTube, The Unge Quest. That series launched in November.

Some YouTubers have made longer-term leaps to linear, even in the late-night talk show space. Comedian Grace Helbig recently hosted a season of The Grace Helbig Show on E (the series has not yet been renewed for a second season). YouTuber Joe Penna also became the host of the Fox series Xploration Earth in September 2014, and comedy group Dude Perfect are set to hit the small screen in 2016 with a new original series on CMT.
