Legendary Digital acquires The Thinning

The feature-length film starring Viner Logan Paul and Disney star Peyton List will mark Legendary's first foray into direct-to-consumer distribution.

Digital producer Legendary Digital has acquired The Thinning, a feature-length thriller starring Vine comedian Logan Paul (pictured) and Disney Channel star Peyton List.

The Thinning, which has not yet become filming, will be directed by Michael Gallagher, who directed YouTuber Shane Dawson’s short I Hate Myselfie. Gallagher also wrote the script for The Thinning, along with YouTuber Steve Greene (who was recently cast in the Maker Studios mockumentary Internet Famous).

Gallagher, Greene and producing partner Jana Winternitz were the winners of Legendary’s House of Horrors short film program, launched in partnership with YouTube Spaces in 2014 to identify emerging talents.

The Thinning takes place in a dystopian near-future where the world’s population is controlled by a high school aptitude test. Two students (Paul and List) discover that the test is covering up for a larger conspiracy and attempt to expose and take down the system.

Legendary will distribute The Thinning direct to consumers through transactional VOD services (none have been specified yet). This is the first transactional VOD distribution for Legendary Digital, which plans to produce and acquire rights to more digital films to be distributed in this fashion in 2016.

Recent digital projects produced by Legendary include the remake of the 1970’s series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl starring YouTubers Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart, which will premiere on Fullscreen’s upcoming SVOD and the horror thriller Dead Rising: Watchtower which bowed on Crackle earlier this year. The prodco has also paired with YouTuber Joey Graceffa for the second season of his series Storytellers.
