Amazon unveils fall pilot season line-up

Fresh off its Emmy wins, the SVOD provider is set to bow six original series featuring some Hollywood heavy-hitters in front of, and behind, the camera.

Fresh off its red-hot reception at the primetime Emmy’s, Amazon has unveiled its 2015 fall pilot season line-up, scheduled to bow later this year on Amazon Video in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Austria.

In all, six pilots will launch with some big names behind them:

  • Highston –  a comedy from Bob Nelson (Nebraska), is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) and executive produced by Sacha Baron Cohen (The Dictator). Actors include newcomer Lewis Pullman, along with Mary Lynn Rajskub (24), and Curtis Armstrong (American Dad!), with guest stars Shaquille O’Neal (Blended) and Flea (The Big Lebowski).
  • Edge – a western developed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and Fred Dekker (Tales from the Crypt), stars Max Martini (Captain Phillips), Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck). Black also directed the pilot series. It was executive produced by Black, Dekker, Barry Josephson (Bones) and David Greenblatt (Battle Los Angeles). 
  • Good Girls Revolt – historical fiction co-produced with TriStar Television and written and created by Dana Calvo (Made in Jersey), directed by Liza Johnson (Return), and executive produced by Calvo, Lynda Obst (Interstellar), Darlene Hunt (The Big C), Don Kurt (Justified) and Jeff Okin (Dark Skies). Stars include Genevieve Angelson (Backstrom), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Erin Darke (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Jim Belushi (Show Me a Hero).
  • One Mississipi – comedy, loosely inspired by Tig Notaro’s (Boyish Girl Interrupted) life. Along with Notaro, it features actors Noah Harpster (Transparent), John Rothman (The Devil Wears Prada) and Casey Wilson (Gone Girl). A co-production with FX Productions, it was written and executive produced by Notaro and Diablo Cody (Juno), executive produced by Louis CK (Louie), Blair Breard (Louie) and Dave Becky (Everyone Hates Chris). 
  • Patriot – political thriller written and directed by Steven Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), and executive produced by Conrad, Gil Bellows (Temple Grandin), Glen Ficarra (Crazy Stupid Love), Charlie Gogolak (Focus) and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love). It stars Australian newcome Michael Dorman (Wonderland), Terry O’Quinn (Lost) and Kathleen Munroe (Call Me Fitz). 
  • Z – historical fiction based on the life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald and stars Christina Ricci (Monster). The series is written by Dawn Prestwich (The Killing) and Nicole Yorkin (The Killing), directed by Tim Blake Nelson (Anesthesia), and executive produced by Pamela Koffler (Still Alice) and Christine Vachon (One Hour Photo) of Killer Films, as well as Ricci. Guest stars include David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Kristine Nielsen (Savages).

As it’s done before, Amazon is inviting its customers to weigh in on the shows they want to see turned into full series for its Prime subscribers. All the pilots will be made available on the Amazon Video app for TVs, connected and mobile devices, and online.

Amazon’s original programming won the brand its first-ever Emmy trophies this year. In all, it took home five awards, including best lead actor in a musical or comedy series for Jeffrey Tambor’s portrayal of a transgender woman in the Amazon original, Transparent. Series creator Jill Soloway also won the title of best directing in a comedy series.

Amazon is promising several new upcoming original series. Set to debut on Oct. 9 is Red Oaks, followed by the adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle on Nov. 20. Season two of Transparent is set to bow Dec. 4. Coming in 2016  will be the second seasons of Mozart in the Jungle, Bosch and the romantic comedy Catastrophe, along with the debut season of The New Yorker Presents.
