Vimeo financing indie hit High Maintenance

Creators say the Vimeo deal, which will fund 6 new episodes, gives them creative control a "television network would never afford us."

Vimeo is making an entry into original programming with the signing of High Maintenance, a critically acclaimed web series from husband-and-wife team Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair.

As part of the deal, Vimeo will finance 6 new episodes to launch exclusively on Vimeo On Demand. Expected to debut later this year, the new episodes could be behind a paywall with “pricing yet to be determined,” according to a statement.

Produced by Janky Clown Productions, each episode follows a pot dealer played by Sinclair (pictured), as he delivers weed to different people around New York City. A lot of critics put High Maintenance on their “must watch” list last year — some episodes are hilarious, others touching, and the rotating cast (including Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens and comedian Hannibal Buress) is always excellent (Ed’s disclaimer: Not a critic, but I am a fan.).

In a New Yorker article last year, it was reported that Sinclair and Blichfeld (an award-winning casting director who worked on 30 Rock) were signing a script deal with a major TV network to convert the 13-episode web series into a cable show. But there are no plans for cable anymore — the show is staying online. In a statement, the creators said the Vimeo deal gives them a chance to “make our series with the creative control a television network would never afford us.”

Blichfeld and Sinclair are represented by Gregory McKnight at CAA, and Kim Jaime at Jackoway Tyerman.
